Language is closely connected with our daily life. Instead of a pure tool for human communication, it is the embodiment of human civilization. Born in a family where my elder sister was versed in English, Cantonese, and Portuguese and my parents were embarked on international business, they exacted profound influence on my upbringing. Since early childhood, they have instilled much knowledge of language learning and democratic education concepts in me. And up to now, I have acquired German, English and Cantonese.
Extraordinary experiences are destined to mold me into a unique student. Up to now, I have traveled Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, among which the visiting experience at Hong Kong is still etched indelibly in my heart. The reasonable British urban transport planning in Hong Kong, wide varieties of goods from all over world in Hong Kong shopping malls, and European and American movies and documentaries in Hong Kong further ignite my strong passion for multiple cultures and endow me with unique insights into one thing and different outlooks on world. Given my strong interest in German cultures, I have studied German at language center after graduation from high school. To better review English, I would pick up new German vocabularies from German-English dictionary. After many trials and endeavors, I was able to speak German and read German books. These multicultural experiences broaden my horizon and aid me to better merge into foreign learning environment.
Various activities and hobbies drilled me a lot and developed my all-round abilities. As the leader in freshmen English speech contest, I would endeavor to involve every teammate in the competition and assign activities to teammates based on their abilities. For example, I would ask those students with good grammar to amend speech contents. This contest enhanced my self-confidence, developed my leadership, improved my expression abilities and speech skills, and gave me a better understanding of western cultures. In my opinion, rather than a one-man show, speech required frequent interaction with audience. As leader in middle school biographical park, I would organize our classmates to plant small radishes in the biological garden, observe their growth and then take notes. And as the biology monitor in high school, I would regularly exchange study plans and course progress with biology teachers and ask other teammates’ advices on water sampling methods and equipment selection in the research of statistics and analysis of microbes in different water bodies. Due to my hard-working at biology, I often ranked top in class quizzes. And as an avid fan of dinosaur, I have read large amounts of books in the area , concerned about the latest news and research in the area since early childhood, and translated thesis of America and the Origin and Early Evolution of ‘Duck-billed’ and A Primitive Hadrosaurid from Southeastern North America and the Origin and Early Evolution of ‘Duck-billed’ Dinosaurs into Chinese. Such colorful activities enrich my school life and make me well prepared for future study at abroad.
Multinational traveling experiences stimulate my desire to study abroad. Having long been known McMaster University given its research-intensive university, its top ranking in the world, and its state-of-the-art facilities and deeply absorbed by Faculty of Humanities’ Strong personal and ethical values, emotional and social intelligence, and creativity, I sincerely hope to probe into Linguistics at your internationally-renowned university. During my undergraduate study, I would like to combine Linguistics with AI artificial intelligence to delve into language developmental history and its effects on society and attempt to accept more novel insights and concepts from different cultures with ambition to resolve conflicts between countries in the near future.
I would appreciate it if you can take my application into careful consideration. If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
