In Sumatera system, a 275kVAC line to connect Northern and Southern part of Sumatera is planned to be in operation by 2010. It is indicated that large scale of mine mouth power plants can be constructed in east Sumatera. For that reasons, a link of mine mouth in south and central Sumatera should be considered to anticipate power transfer to the north and export to Malaysia in the future. The basic form of an HVDC converter consists of a 6 pulse bridge using thyristor valves. A thyristor valve may contain many individual thyristors assembled in series and parallel combination to provide the required voltage and current ratings. The most commonly used converter configuration is 12 pulse arrangements which is a combined unit of two 6 pulse converters. The converters naturally produce harmonics. The higher the converter pulse number, the lower the harmonics produced. However, studies have shown that 12-pulse arrangement is the optimal configuration for HVDC transmission based on the overall cost, including the cost of converters and the filters.
